Wilsons Promontory (AKA ‘The Prom') was Victoria’s first national park and it doesn’t take long to understand why. As soon as you cross into the park, each turn reveals an even more breathtaking view than the last, and I can imagine the sense of responsibility the first explorers felt to protect this natural southern gem.

Our all-new Subaru Forester Hybrid Sport has been the perfect companion for the 200km trip out of Melbourne. Along the way we’ve sampled some of the culinary delights the Gippsland region is famous for, along with its lush rolling hills. I swear I saw the Microsoft Windows XP ‘Bliss’ hills at one point.

Now though, the Forester’s large boot is loaded up with beautiful produce and an excellent white pinot and we’re nearly at our destination at Tidal River. With its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the Forester could go further but this is as far as the public road goes and from here, it’s all about on-foot adventures.

A ‘must do’ is the climb to the summit of Mt Oberon for just about the best views on the prom over the impossibly blue and white bays of Squeaky Beach, Whisky Bay and Tidal River’s own pristine sands. Tomorrow we’ll head out for a running tour and a closer look at each.

With enough time (and supplies) you can hike much further including the most popular excursion to Australia’s most southern mainland point for an overnight stay in simple cabins next to the iconic lighthouse.

For us however, we’re heading back to our cosy ‘retreat’ accommodation and an evening under glamping canvas. The air is unseasonably warm, the breeze has vanished and the often bustling campsites have fallen into a relaxing post-school-holiday silence, broken only by the sizzle of a locally reared steak on the barbecue. The Prom is a mysteriously beautiful place where time stands still but goes too fast all at once.
