Car security is only one of many considerations when looking to buy a new car, although arguably one of the most important. Without proper car security measures in place, you increase the risk of vehicle theft.
Every new car in the Subaru range is fitted with advanced engine immobilisers and also includes DATADOTDNA® anti-theft technology. Although both car security measures, they serve two very different functions.
An engine immobiliser is an electronic device which is fitted to the engine, preventing it from starting without using the correct key. When the key is inserted into the cylinder, a vehicle ID code is transmitted to the body integrated unit, which compares it to the code it has been registered with. The body integrated unit also compares the vehicle ID code with the engine control module (ECM) and the combination meter. If these ID codes match with each other, the system allows the engine to be started. However if the codes do not match, a number of parts vital to engine start-up are disabled such as the ignition, fuel system and starter motor.
To heighten the anti-theft performance of the immobiliser system, the system is designed in a way that the immobiliser cannot be deactivated by simply reconnecting the wiring or by replacing parts. It is for this reason that care must be taken when replacing or repairing the related components.
Another of Subaru’s car security measures is DATADOTDNA® anti-theft technology, which involves approximately 7,000 microscopic dots laser-etched to the car, with the car’s unique Vehicle Identification Number. This system provides car and component identification, thereby deterring professional thieves from targeting Subarus. By making it difficult to change the identity of stolen cars or use parts from multiple vehicles to re-birth a car, Subarus are less attractive to thieves.
The DataDots are almost invisible to the naked eye, yet under UV light shines brightly and is easy to detect, even from a distance. Having located a single DataDot, it can be simply viewed under a minimum of 30 times magnification. This enables authorities and police to conduct on the spot verification of the DataDot against the VIN plate affixed to the car, adding another level to your car security.
There are other various after-market security options available for your Subaru, such as car alarms, tracking systems or steering wheel locks, but one of the best and most obvious car security measures is common sense. When possible, try and leave your car in a secure parking facility, always ensure it’s properly locked and all windows closed, with all valuables out of sight, even when leaving your car for short period of time.
Remember, you can never be too careful when it comes to the security of your car.
