Another outcome from Toyota’s shareholding has been FHI’s ability to concentrate on developing their first diesel engine.

Subaru CEO Mr Takenaka said: Because we are a small company, we had to choose between hybrid and diesel. Now that we have this arrangement with Toyota, diesel engine development and production are going to be our priorities.

The  Outback was the first model range to get a diesel option,  going on sale in Europe  this year.

Subaru expects around half of its European sales to be diesel models by 2010 and then around a third of all sales, including, ultimately, up to 20 per cent of sales in Japan and the US.

The compact diesel has similar dimensions to Subaru's equivalent petrol engines and will be displayed in Geneva linked to an All-Wheel Drive system.

At present there are no firm plans for Australian introduction. But watch this space.
